A 2D sandbox in space , where you control a space ship, explore new planets and “aliens” but with some humour.

A 2d sidescroller game. Your objective is to get to the end of each level. Possibly action elements like pressure plates. We could also make it P2P where 2 players must cooperate to get to the end of the level.

I like this idea, especially all the different branches of programming it needs.
If the idea is to develop a browser game, it could be easier to people try it, IMHO.
Is this idea for a website?
I like the P2P idea.
how would we make it?
with html5 probably, maybe node.js as well
Look forward to participating no matter what the project is, but I like this one.
I love this idea and the one of making lists, this obviously is more complex. Would love to be involved.

what about an advanced web browser like firefox or or chrome

I already know how to build a simple one
@Alex but how about an advenced one? Maaybe use WebKit aswell, HTML5 etc.
I’m not sure about an advanced one yet I’ll look into it.
i can maybe build one with python 3 not sure though.
Almost a complete newb, no idea how much programming this would require/ which ones would be used (html? python? etc.) but it would be great if we could create a viable alternative to google web browsers…
You can’t use html to build a web browser but you can use python.
how would you use html to build a browser? That would be inception. Html which parses html code.
i think this would be cool. it seems that i would have to learn php to be of sny use though…
you can’t use html to build a web browser
create a web browser from scratch is very difficult. Believe me, its not that easy can’t be created int html or any other web language.
I already made a browser. http://jsbrowser.wordpress.com/

A site that makes it easy to form meetups for codecademy and other sites.

Good idea, but I think it’s too easy.
It depends for whom. :)

A first person comical shooter game.

I don’t really see how this will work.
Try steam’s game Teamfortress or battlefieldfbadcompany2 if you like to play such games ;)

I will be on the freenode channel #opencodex all day. You can ask any questions you have there.

A top-bottom scroller action airplane fighter game(2D).

A web app where people can make lists. But not to-do lists. For example:
- Top 10 programming books
- best movies of 2013
- best 80 pop-songs
- must-read books
Note that this will need a lot of backend work, possibly using Django or ROR

I love this idea, it introduces a lot of concepts.
Sounds good as long as there will be basic coding for newbies.
already exists..
link?
|listverse.com| (google search is full of it). also : |list.ly|, |http://www.forbes.com/lists/, ….|
list.ly is exactly the same as this idea.
You’re right
Totally right. I didn’t know that. Sorry guys.
The idea of a web app sounds good, but we need an original idea

A site where people can offer friendly services for “free”. If someone does a service, you have to do one back. The one’s that ask for the service also get tracked and they in their turn should help someone else (with something they’re good at)

I like the idea, but it might get really weird what people ask for.
lol
“…it might get really weird what people ask for…” - Absolutely. This would require some people to act as moderators.
I’m in

Note that I didn’t include the original idea, since it wasn’t specific enough.

!!! SHAMELESS PLUG
I have a GPL licensed, Python3 and HTML5, interactive development environment called nush. It’s aimed at new programmers.
The code was just tidied up for a demo, and seems to all be working nicely.
If you’re after an open source project with lots of opportunities to spin off smaller sub-projects, that’s also very welcoming to people who are new to programming, check it out. I’d be delighted to have you on board.

A web app that displays good sources of healthy food. You input your location (Zip or City) and a google map pops up that shows you all farmer markets, organic shops…
This will rely heavily on API’s (Gmaps)

I don’t see this getting popular.
This probably exists too.

I like this idea, especially the humour part.
So, FTL but as a sandbox? YES PLEASE <3
This is probably to big.
Nothing’s too big.
I like this idea even more then mine. We could divide ourselves into groups which would work on various modules. Like one group would work on spaceship controls, other on AI etc. We also could make a tool for newbies, so they could easily implement new planets (solar systems?) into the game. So yeah, my vote goes here.
I like this, what engine u thinking of? OpenGL?
Nico, when does the voting ends?
The 1st of september.
can’t we end it already its 13 to 6… im dying to get some work done ;)
I’ll make a todo list..
Nope sorry. I set this date and I’m sticking to it. Besides, who said there’s only gonna be one “winner” project?
I didnt know that, can you tell me what it is you’re planning?
We’re gonna do several hackathons. One project might be too little. Also not everyone might like this idea, so there’s gonna be something for everyone.
where will the hackathon go trough?
That’s something I need to discuss later. Some big possibilities: Github, Cloud9, Nitrous.io. Possibly also using asana.
btw, @TheRedKnight It’s getting closer now, 11-8
ok, thx.
I like this, also speaking of humor, aim at something like Day of the Tentacle, that is brilliant humor. :)
I like the idea! Humor would be good for a game too.
ok do we still have to do this its obvious which one is the winner.
ok
Has it already been started? its september :)
The project on github is still pretty empty. We need some more details on this idea, and maybe some images to start off with.
Sounds cool
@Alec Girman, Whats the project called?
What language? I’m learning python so I can start programming on a raspberry pi whe I get one.
