font-family:serif; results in sans-serif

The exercise gives me "that's correct" but I can plainly see that I'm not getting a serif font. Maybe it's the browser I'm using (maxthon/webkit based) but regardless, it might cause some folks to wonder.

That happened to me in the part before this one. Now I am having the same problem as EliPetrova. It is saying "Did you forget a comma" when I am pretty sure I didn't. Oh well, hopefully I'll fix this myself. xD

I did indeed get it done, however while it was telling me I needed a comma the only way to complete the lesson is to add a semi-colon at the end of it.

I also see the comic sans ms-type font instead of cursive. I noticed, however, that when I write "cursive" in the stylesheet, it doesn't turn green as all valid fonts have prior to this lesson. (Speaking of which, the last lesson that asked for cursive behaved the same way.)

I suggest you review your code. Most modern browsers support serif font. :)

I have the opposite problem - I see the serif-font, but the big brother is telling me, that I am wrong in my coding.

Not a problem! Good luck with the rest of the HTML/CSS tutorial. ;)
