Updates to CSS: An Overview

Hi all,

I'm really sorry for the frustrations some of you have experienced lately with CSS: An Overview. I've gone through the course and fixed the browser cross-compatibility bugs, which should resolve any outstanding issues with Chrome, Firefox, and Safari—all exercises should work with recent versions of these three browsers.

Particular fixes:

  • You should no longer have problems with <td> heights (some Firefox users might have seen a height of 46px instead of the expected 50px).
  • Correction tests have been made more flexible and should no longer be unnecessarily case-sensitive (for instance, the tests shouldn't care if you type font-family: Verdana or font-family: verdana).
  • Correction tests have been made more flexible to allow unusual whitespace, though it's best if you follow the spacing conventions used in the instructions. For instance,

p {
    font-family              :            Garamond      ;
}

is valid CSS, but it's much nicer looking (and more conventional) to write something like:

p {
    font-family: Garamond;
}

(The semicolon is optional for the only or last item between the curly braces, but it's a good idea to include it in case you go back and add more items later.)

  • Instructions and hints have been clarified, and additional reminders to reset your zoom using Ctrl-0 or Cmd-0 have been added. If you're zoomed in or zoomed out, this will affect the size of elements on the page and may cause you to see an error (for example, "It looks like your font-size is 17.189px" when you've set it to 18px).

Please let me know if you continue to have difficulties, and again, my apologies. Thanks so much for your patience and support!

Hi Eric...thanks for letting us know..but I think there r still room for improvement. Like i cant find any possible error on the following code & it still doesn't let me pass...both Chrome & Firefox! It's regarding 2.5:

img {
height: 100px;
width: 300px;
border: 1px solid #4682b4;
}

a {
text-decoration: none;
color: #cc0000;

Figured it out. I was missing key parts of the code of both the HTML and CSS side. Look over your code carefully. What is missing? :D I hope this helps.

you cant have the border with the 2 other modifications. You have to move it down one and create another one. Like this.
img {
height: 100px
width: 300px
}
img {
border: 1px solid #4682b4
}

if you are having a problem with the text decoration check if it says a{
text-decoration: none;
color: #cc0000;
} because when I first did it I thought it was "link{" instead of "a{"

just so you know on reveiw lesson 3, it dosn't say to set the font to Verdana before saying put in a backup. I'll copy and paste it so you know what I'm talking about --> Set the p font-family to Garamond.
Give h1 a backup font of sans-serif and p a backup font of serif. Check the Hint if you need a refresher!

Whenever I try to enter the necessary code I keep getting an error about putting a border around an image which has a set height and width.

Stepping away (did I leave the page?) and returning seems to have worked some magic and I've proceeded. It still shows the warning icon next to the "border" line, though.

Hi,
same problem as other users. The 5.5 Review section of the CSS: An Overview lesson is driving me crazy. When I opened the stylesheet file the code was already there
(link {
text-decoration: none;
color: #cc0000;
})
I have applied all your suggestions so far: I have move the code to the top of the page, I have changed 'link' with 'a' and I still get the error answer 'Ooops, Did you remember to set your text-decoration to none;?'
I am sure it must be a bug.
Please, Eric, fix it and...thank you for this wonderful course, I am really enjoying it!

OK! I solved it. I ended up hitting reset code and when it reset it it looked like this:
img{
height:100px; width:300px;
}
img{
border:1px solid #4682b4;
}

THEN: I added the following...
a{
text-decoration:none;
color:#CC0000
}

AND it worked. I think I had erased part of the code that it was building on and needed. I was ready to pull my hair out over this. Hope this helps!

I have also discovered that you have to hit "Reset Code" before you start on each page. I haven't had any trouble since I've been doing this.

Hello Eric! Basically learning HTML & CSS has been going smooth & i really owe u for this. But i'm afraid "running" these lessons hasn't been as smooth & eating up all my time even if the code stands correct. Some of the issues need ur supervision...such as:

  1. When we go back on a lesson all the indentation is lost & all the codes r in one line...which is very frustrating.
  2. Again...after going back, i..& i'm pretty sure some others too...encounter some "extra" codes in the html window which weren't there in the 1st place. I'll be greatly appreciate the explanation behind these "new" codes.
  3. Even if CSS is linked to HTML & CSS code is correctly modified according to the instruction, I have to go back to the HTML & edit the CSS code in there as well to make it work, which I suppose, shouldn't be happening right? PLZ help!

I just noticed that Section 3. Fall back! does not mention to add Verdana as the font-family for the h1, but it requires it to be correct.

I don't know if this is intentional to make the student add it in by memory or not, because the instructions do say to add a backup font of sans-serif

If you're using Firefox, you can't skip adding a URL to src="". If you do, you'll get an img that's only 16px high!

What does this mean?

I posted a separate response to this one, but in summary, after completing the "Many Selectors, Many Properties" and the "Fall Back!" sections I get an error telling me to check that I set the font to Verdana (which I have). I also noticed that in addition to the Result" pane, both Firefox and Chrome do not seem to recognize the color #4A4943.

Not sure why this isn't voted up to the top (I tried all the other fixes in chrome and firefox, before this worked in Internet Exploder). Just don't copy-pasta this guys css, as it's bad, and has left out semi colons and img height/width property-values. I used IE11 btw. I think code academy leaving this obvious bug in is just a way to get you used to the actual frustrations you'll have making %$#@! work cross-platform.

There are two parts to the link. The first is the actual web address you want to link to ("url" in the instructions). Second is the text you want displayed as the clickable link. It's this part that's missing. For example:

<a href="http://www.monmouth.org.uk/">Monmouth </a>

Here, Monmouth is the text supplied as the visible link, sitting between the <a> and </a> tags. Click on it to go to the link.

That looks fine. In that case you may have some mis-aligned tags elsewhere in the code which are preventing the element from being recognised. The tags should be highlighted in red in the editor if all is well (plus yellow for the link, and white for the text). Can't think of anything else that might be wrong.

Hay guys i've been having issues with this course as well.

Sometimes it doesn't quite load exactly what you are supposed to do first time round,
(e.g. tells you to make /p font-family serif when you are supposed to make it sans-serif/ )

So through no fault of your own it cant possibly get it to work work.

 That said, I have found that if I refresh my browser it can help,

I am using Safari

This addresses the text decoration problem Zinia had

try adding quotes before and after your link. like ...href="(type the address here)">

also in your CSS you want to type in
a {
text-decoration: none;
}

I wasn't putting the quotation marks in mine.
I hope this helps, it won't let me type it in proper html, so my example might not be the clearest; im using internet explorer

Hi Eric, I hope this is the right place to comment an improvement:

Lesson 19/26 CSS an overview:
Background color, height, and width

It's not very clear the "hint" section on where to put the DIV tag(?) opening.

I had forgotten it, and it doesn't mention anywhere where to put it. Would be good to at least have in the stylesheet.css already open like this:

div{
}

Sorry again if this has been mentioned previously or something. Great lessons. Thanks!

Tried this a kajillion different ways...
To be totally honest, I've tried EX. 25 in the CSS Overview several different ways, replicating the same steps, doing something different, replicating, etc. After a couple of hours, I walked away (aka looked at Craiglist.) I came back. Tried the same thing again, and BAM I passed. So I'm not sure that there's a magical solution, (obviously doing it kind of right, is a good place to start.) Here's what I ended up with (ignore the "---"'s):

index.html

<!DOCTYPE html>

<---head--->
<---link type="text/css" rel="stylesheet" href="stylesheet.css"/--->
<---title--->Result<---/title--->
<---/head>
<---body->
<---h1--->Don't Ask<---/h1>
<---p>Behold<---/p>
<---/body>
<---/html>

css.stylesheet

h1{
font-family:Verdana,Sans-Serif;
color:#576D94;
}
p{
font-size:18px;
color:#4A4943;
font-family:Garamond,Serif;
}
img{
height:100px;
width:300px;
}
img{
border:1px solid #4682b4;
}

Just thought I'd share! The lesson is awesome! I'm really excited about the more frequent reviews. I just really wanted to throw my laptop, for a bit. Happy Coding Friends!

I finally found the mistakes on my computer were due to the commas in the line <
link type="text/css", rel="stylesheet", href="stylesheet.css"/>
which were automatically added by the system . After deleting those commas (which should not be there) everything is fine. Hope it helps.

Hello. It's always saying i have mistake in the CSS:Review part 25/26 "Size and borders".
This is what it says:Oops, try again. Did you remember to give your image a 1px solid #4682b4 border?
Instructions.
Add an img to your HTML document. Its src attribute can point anywhere! (Check the Hint if you're stuck or need a picture.)
On the CSS tab, set your image's height to 100px and width to 300px.
On the CSS tab, give your image a border of 1px solid #4682b4.

HTML Code:
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<title>Result</title>
<link type="text/css" rel="stylesheet" href="stylesheet.css"/>
</head>
<body>
<h1>Some stuff</h1>
<p>text text text text text text text </p>
<img src="http://bit.ly/NnVbxt" />
</body>
</html>

CSS Code:
h1{
font-family: Verdana;
color: #576D94;
font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;
}
p{
font-size: 18px;
color: #4A4943;
font-family: Garamond,serif;
}
img{
height: 100px;
width: 300px;
border: 1px solid #4682B4;

Hi. I had exactly the same problem. Issue was solved by completing the lesson with other browser. I just opened IE and everything works fine without even changing the content of .css

I kept running into the same issue with 'oops!" error related to the img border 1px solid... part. I am on FF (the latest as of today). For me I tend to have my zoom on higher because of my vision issues. I knew the code was right... all of it including the html- so i didn't forget anything.

I then fiddled with the zoom a little more- I had gotten it at 100% but it still failed... I then decided to decrease the browser font size even lower,,, to 80% THEN it worked/passed.

CodeAcademy gets an F for not accounting for disabled folks who may have to have lower resolution and adjusted dpi etc to function. Exercise 25/26 showed that.

I, like many others, am having trouble with 25/26. I've tried the resetting zoom, zooming in, out. Tried out others code, did not work, here is my code:

h1 { font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; color: #576D94; }
p { font-size: 18px; color: #4A4943; font-family: Garamond, serif; }
img { height: 100px; Width: 300px; border: 1px solid #4682b4; }

No matter what I do it will not let me proceed.

Instead of saying in the hint "Try resetting your zoom by pressing Ctrl+0 or Cmd-0." it should say something like "If you are getting unexpected errors, try resetting your zoom by pressing Ctrl+0 or Cmd-0."

Because otherwise you're like - it worked for the previous 20 exercises, and I haven't changed the zoom in my browser, so why should I do that.
