Picture Michael R Accavallo about 4 years ago

if your using any browser I found that if you change the browsers zoom to 100% it works fine and will let you submit it. on Ie click on the gear on the top right and hover over zoom and select 100. the ctrl+0 thing doesn't work because my default browser size is 125 not 100. so all you have to do is change it and it will work

Yep, Firefox is bugged for it. I tried the ctrl-0 thing and it didn't work. Just use Chrome to complete it.

So this is my first course and I'm new here and maybe this has already been commented on, but do others find it rather ironic that a site devoted to teching coding fundamentals has an obvious bug that isn't getting fixed?

if you have firefox, try ctrl+0 - if that does not work try ctrl+- (i.e. ctrl and then the 'minus sign' or the 'dash') - this will zoom out your browser. For me, if I reset with ctrl+0, and then zoom out twice with ctrl plus '-', this exercise will move forward. It seems that on my laptop ctrl+0 resets to like 125% zoom, so you have to zoom out from there to get to 100%. Using the touchpad isn't accurate enough. Use ctrl plus '-' once and press submit - if that doesn't work, keep trying ctrl plus '-' until you get to the right size.

525e480d80ff33d603000bb1_743173101 Marcattan Catrin over 3 years ago

Why ? Setting height & width did solve the issue and I know it works outside this environment. Ran through the course while people I assist might meet some bugs in the new digital environment hosted here.

Another approach to resolve this is to, put an asterisk before the bracket. It gives you the yellow flag but goes through anyway?!. After it goes through it will give you the yellow flag. Now, if you hover your mouse over the flag, it simply says: "the universal selector (*) is known to be slow" Yet it went to the next lesson for me. Although I did this after Codecademy made a change to the lesson. Either way, it is not a cheat, but instead is an alternative. Honestly I am not totally sure, since I am also new here. But it worked. Note: It seems that this whole course is...all about syntax and your ability to remember everything!

Use ctrl plus '-' once and press submit - if that doesn't work, keep trying ctrl plus '-' until you get to the right size.

see it:
Set your tds (table data cells) to have a height of 50px so we can see them better when we add our border.
Give your tds a border of 1px dashed blue.
Give your table a border of 1px solid black.

toddw3 had it correct. I've had the same problem with firefox. After resetting the zoom with ctrl+0 and then zooming out twice it let me proceed with the lesson. Not really a big deal if anything it gives students practice researching problems in their code which is cool. Thanks for the heads up!

I'm using Chrome on Windows. CTRL+0 didn't fix the problem right away so I just manually adjusted the zoom until the small preview screen is about 1/6 of the browser size.

In the code window, the "Using heights with border can sometimes make the elements larger..." notice was still there but just ignore it. It should work just fine and pass the test once you find the right zoom.

Use ctrl plus '-' once and press submit - if that doesn't work, keep trying ctrl plus '-' until you get to the right size.

td {
height: 50px;
width: 50px;
border: 1px dashed blue;
}

table {
border: 1px solid black;
}
I ran into this exact error message using I.E. 9. Used Safari and got through.

I got it! Finally for all you IE users. Keep adjusting your screen zoom one click at a time (with the mouse wheel) and then click submit. At some point the stars will align and the lesson will be at one with the zoom and give you that long overdue green "way to go" message at the bottom.

Actually, there is a way. At the top left of your screen, there's a percentage sign showing how far you are in the course; it has a drop-down arrow on it. Click on it and choose the next lesson down, in this case "Links and text decoration".

544d8f032487ba051d02dc860ee9828a?s=140&d=retro Mitsubachi over 3 years ago

Unfortunately, that's what I had to do, because I couldn't get past the lesson, even using all the other tips shown here. :(

This bug seems to still not be fixed. I followed the instructions exactly:

Instructions:

  1. Set your [td]s (table data cells) to have a [height] of [50px] so we can see them better when we add our border.
  2. Give your [td]s a border of [1px] [dashed blue].
  3. Give your [table] a [border] of [1px] [solid black].

My Code:
1 /Add your CSS below!/
2 td {
3 height: 50px;
4 border: 1px dashed blue;
5 }
6
7 table {
8 border: 1px solid black;
9 }

After submitting, the preview window shows a table looking the way I would expect, but I still get an error saying, "Oops, try again! Did you set your border width to 1px? Check all your opening and clsing tags!" The hint on the lower-left only says to try pressing ctrl-0, which I tried, and nothing happened.

I'll go on to try some of the hints others have posted here to see if I can get to the next lesson, but either the instructions need to be changed, or whatever bug that may be needs to be fixed. Thank you!

Oh, and I tried all the other stuff (the *, resetting the zoom with the hot keys and the menu).

If it keeps not working, you can skip the lesson by clicking the percentage in the upper-left corner of the screen and clicking on the next lesson down.

I am not to bothered about it not working on a number of these lessons as it is easy enough to tell if you have done it properly after the error comes up. However you should be able to mark the lesson as being done so it doesn't always open at that lesson. If that system was abused you are only kidding yourself..

I think you might need to look into the wording you use in the instructions.

  1. Set your tds (table data cells) to have a height of 50px so we can see them better when we add our border.
  2. Give your tds a border of 1px dashed blue.
  3. Give your table a border of 1px solid black.

td {
height: 50px;
border: 1px dashed blue;
}

table {
border: 1px solid black;
}

I cant see the blue lines.

If I click on finish it goes to the next screen but I think this would confuse people that does not have HTML or CSS Experience. Just a thought.
