It's like every other statement. If we want the body of the page have a black background, it would look like this:

body {
background: black;
}

This tells the browser, "I want the background to be black." "Background" is a property of the element (which in this case, is the body), and black is a (color and) value, and in this case shows what the "background" equals. The property and value together make a statement. The semi-colon, ";" allows us to add another statement.

So, if we wanted to set the color (color property sets the color of the text) and keep the background black, it would look like this.

body {
background: black; /*this makes the body of the background black =) */
color: white; /*this makes the color of the text inside the body white =) */
}
