Why no "var" before "bubbleShape"?

Is there any good reason why I should not write the following?

var  bubbleShape = "squares";

It works without it, but it does seem weird to me.

Because codecademy says that you shouldn't write down var because var usually doen't stand for variable and squares is the varriable. Some people think it does, but it's a misunderstanding.
