About this certification path
Passing the Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) Foundation℠ exam confirms a candidate’s understanding of the principles, practices, and organizational approaches used to improve the reliability, scalability, and availability of modern IT services. It demonstrates knowledge of SRE principles and their relationship with DevOps, Service Level Indicators (SLIs), Service Level Objectives (SLOs), Service Level Agreements (SLAs), error budgets, monitoring, observability, telemetry, instrumentation, capacity planning, performance management, and techniques for reducing operational toil through automation. The certification also covers secure automation, CI/CD and safe deployment practices, incident response, on-call operations, blameless postmortems, anti-fragility, learning from failure, technical debt, change and risk management, and organizational patterns for adopting and scaling SRE. The SRE Foundation blueprint also emphasizes reliability at scale, gradual deployment approaches such as blue/green, A/B, and canary releases, automated testing and monitoring, auto-scaling, work sharing between development and operations, and continuous improvement across the software delivery lifecycle. There are no formal prerequisites for the SRE Foundation certification, although familiarity with common DevOps terminology, concepts, and related work experience is recommended. The certification is aimed at professionals involved in improving service reliability, operational performance, automation, and organizational change, including Site Reliability Engineers, software engineers, DevOps practitioners, system integrators, IT managers, IT team leaders, product owners, Scrum Masters, consultants, business managers, technology leaders, and others involved in delivering or supporting reliable digital services. Although candidates should understand technical concepts such as monitoring, automation, incident management, CI/CD, capacity planning, and deployment strategies, the Foundation certification emphasizes understanding and applying core SRE principles and practices rather than requiring advanced software engineering or production SRE experience.
